The GOP debate as it happens...and a prediction from Editor MOTO at the end.

The Republicans are all in St. Pete and here at MoPo we don't think we can stand to live-blog the whole thing, but we are going to instead comment on their comments as they go.

First an introduction from the Florida Governor, Jeb...no wait...some other guy.  When the hell did that happen?

I am looking forward to tonight.  Mostly because the Repubs all through a fit and said they wouldn't do this debate.  Anderson Schaff 360 said that the Repubs were sent 2,000 more YouTube questions than the Dems...and he doesn't know why.

I'm also look forward to tonight because I want Gov. Huckabee to do well.  I forsee Gov. Huckabee as the next President of the United States.  There:  a MOTO prediction.

Fred Thompson has yet to catch fire like predicted - so I am looking forward to seeing if he can become a star

The pundits are predicting Giuliani will take a kicking tonight, and here early on, Romney just accused Rudy of ruling a Sovereign City (for illegal immigrants).  Rudy kicks back saying Romney hosted a Sovereign Mansion, because illegals actually worked on his Governor's mansion grounds.  Huckabee would never act like this.

Rudy just accused Romney of being 'Holy-er than thou'.  HA!  Was that a slap at Mitt's Mormon faith?

Ok.  Thompson speaks.  That is a good voice.  America could vote for that.

This is kind of a noisy crowd, and it could benefit Ron Paul.  He just used the "We came to change Washington, and Washington changed us".  Ron Paul is doing the kind of thing his supporters want him to say.  The crowd is mostly silent when he speaks.  A couple cheers as he builds, but then he takes a breath, changed direction and says that he wants to eliminate government spending.  Big applause.  Then he says to do that by eliminating the Department of Education.  complete silence from the crowd after that one.  I know what he is saying, but the crowd doesn't get it.  This guy does not have poll-tested answers.  It's great to speak from your heart.  But I am sorry - you are running for President of the United States in 2007.  Common Sense can only get you so far congressman.  Sorry.

Huckabee just follow up Paul by saying he would get rid of the internal revenue service.  That's how you get applause.

New question..I missed it, but McCain just attacked Ron Paul?  What?  Why do you 'attack down'?  Now McCain tells us the 'message of the troops to you sir" (Ron Paul being the 'sir' in question) is...whatever.  So now McCain is attacking a lesser candidate and attempting to speak on behalf of all of our service men and women?  McCain may really be crazy.  I would bet that quip isn't poll tested either.

Giuliani just said 'Mayor' again.  We should have made that a drinking game.  Drink every time Rudy says 'mayor', '9-11', or 'New York'.

Ok.  On to the 'Campaign YouTube style' videos.  First one from McCain.  It sucked.  Just him and Hillary, and his "I was tied up at the time line."

Next one was from Tancredo.  It sucks too.

Talking about 'toxic toys' from China now. Hunter gets in his only good line of night - telling America that the best way to avoid problems with toys from China is to 'Buy American'

Fred Thompson video.  An attack ad.  It also kinda sucked.  Reduced Anderson Schaff 360 to asking Thompson, "What's up with that."   Huckabee and Romney were attacked.  Romney responded by saying "I was wrong" (about being pro-choice).  Huckabee said he stood by his record and closed with a wholesome "Like my pastor used to say, when their kicking at your behind, that's because their behind you" (or something close to that.  He really does look good.  Looks comfortably 'staged'.

Gun Control question to Duncan Hunter.  Is that really his name.  He is not a big deal.

Another gun question:  Do you own a gun?  Interesting answer from McCain.  He said that he spent a lot of time with guns, and now he does not own one.

Death Penalty question.  Huckabee answers.  Wow.  GREAT answer.  This guy sat down and memorized and scrutinized every word that is coming out of his mouth.

The actual question was "What would Jesus do" concerning the death penalty...when Anderson Schaff repeated the question, Huckabee smartly answers, "Jesus was smart enough not to run for public office."

And now a whole question on the bible.  Huckabee, a one-time minister, hit a home run on that question too.

Romney Video.  Just a positive campaign ad. The creativity on these things is horrible.

Rudy's Video brings us back from the break.  Funny.  Made fun of Hillary and gave Rudy credit for reducing snowfall.  Best ad so far.

--I just had to step away for a phone call--

McCain is now talking about Vietnam.  He is making a good point.  He said that the Vietnamise did not follow us home.  Our opponents in this war will.

...I have really tuned out of this thing.

Duncan Hunter ad.  Looks like he is running for Congress.

Time for me to sign off this thing.  I am happy.  Huckabee has really stepped forward.  I predict he wins Iowa.

He's no David All

But maybe could stand to get away from the script:

Mitt Romney lost bad

Not as if I was considering voting for any of these white men, but Mitt Romney really bombed on two issues.

1. He said he wouldn't discuss torture techniques. Some techniques were clearly banned in the Geneva Conventions. Mitt obviously thinks the conventions mean nothing. As president, would Mitt reject any other work of previous administrations? That's my question for the next YouTube debate, though it's clear I won't get my chance.

2. I believe Mitt said he was a life long Red Sox fan. He grew up in Michigan. The Detroit Tigers may be an AL Central team not an AL East, but they are still an AL team and compete for the pennant with the Red Sox. Why would he be a Red Sox fan? Me thinks this man has no convictions of his own, and like all decisions he makes (pro-choice in Massachusetts, pro-life for a Repub presidential primary), Mitt allows his stances in life to be picked by his constituency, not by himself. I know boiled Ramen noodles with more backbone.

Gays in the Military

A 40-year military veteran has asked the candidates if they thought the American military men and women were not professional enough to serve side by side with gays and lesbians.

Some in the crowd are booing him.

Now McCain answers...I look forward to his answer: He says that the 'don't ask don't tell' policy is working.

Huckabee on Space

Gov. Huckabee is now discussing spending money on NASA.
He made good points about how the research NASA does benefits us all, and made a joke about blasting Hillary off in a Rocket.

Huckabee is kicking ass.

Huckabee on African Americans

Huckabee says that 48% of blacks voted for him for Governor.

Then he goes to say that he want to include many more minorities in the Republican Party.

Watching the post-debate wrap-up

Is it really called the "Ron Paul Revolution"?

Editor MOTO
Master of the Obvious

how could you get a backwards "L" for the "Revolution?"

R[EVO_l]ution

now getting the backwards "E: is trickier

Backwards 'E'

Try this: R[3VOJ]ution

I hope that doesn't offend R2D2.

Excellent

It was so obvious, I can't believe I missed it.

Couple thoughts

I just caught the tail end, but a couple thoughts:

1. I better just get this out first, Anderson Cooper makes any debate much easier to watch : )

2. Pundits are saying that Thompson's 'attack' video was desperate - I think it was smart. If he's running as the conservative candidate he should get Romney's earlier liberal stances and Huckabee's tax statements out in the open as much as he can.

(That being said, I'll go on the record as saying that Romney's earlier stances make me think that of all the GOP's we might be subjected to for the 5 years, he'd be one of the easiest to stomach. Apply the same rule for Huckabee and its a much different story though. Sorry MOTO, if Huckabee wins, we're all in trouble. Again)

3. Best answer of the night was to the Jesus question. I love that someone asked that...I wonder if that guy really votes Republican. If nothing else Huckabee won points with me on that one for being able to think on his toes.

4. I really just can't wait until Guiliani's personal attack strategy backfires on him and the whole country get to here what NY has known about the mayor for a long time - he's a nut job. But nut jobs make campaigns a lot more fun so I hope he stages a protest on Romney's front lawn so the festivities will begin.

oh Ronnie

1. If you think Anderson Cooper is dreamy - check out Rep Rob Schaff!

2. Romney should be on TV on Sunday mornings asking for $15 to pass on the lord's word (do morman's believe in the 'lord'?) Not political talkshows. He's just too 'politician-y'.

3. Of all the great answers 'The Huck' gave tonight - the Bible lines were a given. He is/was a preacher! (Amen)

4. They did an overall bad job of attacking Rudy tonight. He did a poor job overall anyway - so it didn't matter.
